Leadership dilemmas: When our ideals meet the realities of working life
How do we navigate situations where our professional ambitions, personal values and responsibilities towards others pull us in different directions?
In this podcast episode, three guests explore real-life dilemmas collected by CBS students through interviews with employees and managers. The conversation addresses the challenges of balancing care and responsibility in leadership, maintaining a professional identity when life circumstances change, and setting boundaries in a demanding work culture..

The following three dilemmas are discussed:
- 1. The leader struggling to live up to their own ideals (02:23–15:55)
A manager wants to be both caring and clear about expectations. But decisions about staffing, employee performance and financial responsibilities sometimes conflict with the manager’s personal values. How can a leader make difficult decisions while remaining true to their ideals of good leadership? - 2. The young lawyer returning from maternity leave (15:59–25:32)
An ambitious young lawyer is preparing to return to a demanding workplace after maternity leave. She wants to maintain her professional identity and continue developing her career, but she also wants to prioritise her family. How can she navigate expectations that seem increasingly difficult to reconcile? - 3. The consultant who is always available (25:35–37:01)
A dedicated consultant works in an environment where answering emails late at night and during weekends has become normal. Although nobody explicitly requires constant availability, he fears being perceived as less committed if he stops responding. How can he establish boundaries when being available has become part of what it means to be a successful employee?
The panel features:
- Bolette Christensen, former director at the Confederation of Danish Industry and former CEO of the BØRNEfonden, now professional board member.
- Lasse Skjønning Andersen, founder of GRØD.
- Albert Harson, actor.
The session was facilitated by Pernille Steen Pedersen, founder and head of CBS WellbeingLab, as part of the CBS course Shame, Stress and Leadership.
The podcast is part of CBS WellbeingLab’s work with educational formats that invite students to explore complex dilemmas through different experiences and perspectives, supporting the development of critical judgement and relational capabilities.
