What is Well-being Lab?
At CBS Well-being Lab, we explore student well-being at business schools and beyond. Our goal is to understand the roots of stress, anxiety, and reduced well-being among students, and to develop theories and practical initiatives that prevent unnecessary stress and support healthier learning environments.
We view well-being as a relational, collective phenomenon – not an individual responsibility. Stress and anxiety stem from broader cultural and institutional conditions, so meaningful change requires caring for the shared environment and engaging the whole community.
Core concepts
Shame and FOPO (Fear of People’s Opinion)
Many students relate to themselves through hyper-judgment, marked by anxiety over appearance, performance, and moral inadequacy. With concepts like shame and FOPO (fear of people’s opinions) we see how younger generations live in a constant state of self surveillance, seeking validation without space for solitude or genuine reflection.
This is an issue that well-being initiatives need to respond to, as it inhibits vulnerability and trust in learning communities.
The Transformative Capability Approach
With our Transformative Capability Approach we wish to focus on nurturing existential, human capabilities like empathy and self-reflection – and create cultures of collective resilience where these may grow.
We wish to ask deeper questions: What capabilities do we want our students to develop to flourish together so they may live with the (painful) complexities of the real world? And how can we help them learn to view individual vulnerabilities as shared conditions?
Ways to collaborate
At Well-being Lab we wish to collaborate and share ideas on how to improve well-being among students and young people. We are eager to share research findings, facilitate discussions on stress and well-being, develop new tools and ideas together, and much more.
